Wrestlers Background.
John was born in on the 11th of September 1965 in Kilmarnock, Scotland. John's father William McIllroy was a proud and known wrestler in The Highlands of Scotland. However William was known in Highland Wrestling Championships as William Wallace. John began training at wrestling at the age on 13 under the watchful eye of his dad William. When John reached 19 he was given his first break in wrestling in his dad's old federation HCW. Here John Became known firstly as William Wallace III. This gimmick lasted for a few month, but never really took off and so John was axed from the federation and went back into training. Until The HCW asked him to rejoin its forces. This time John used the name "The Highland Warrior" John McIllroy. This went well as he joined forces with a friend from the wrestling academy Alasdair Hamish, who became known as "The Gaelic Warrior" Hamish Johnstone. The two became known as The Scottish Warriors, they managed to capture the tag team titles before adding a third member Ambrose Gordon Kinnell better known as "The Highlander" Iain MacIntyre. The trio became quickly known as The Tartan Army. The trio made headwave within the HCW with McIllroy capturing the tag titles again with Hamish and then dropping so that Hamish and Iain could go on a run as the tag champs with McIllroy going on to become an 5 time Heavyweight Champion. When the HWC closed its doors in late 1997 The Tartan Army stayed together and jumped back to Mainland Scotland where they joined the Scottish Championship Wrestling. Here the Tartan Army who was by this time well liked in Scottish Wrestling, was instantly take as the good guy stable and McIllroy captured the tag titles with Hamish again while Iain was on the injured list, but when the duo lost the titles they thought it only best to take a split and go their sepparate ways with Johnstone leaving the SCW. McIllroy stayed with the company and went onto capture its main title and the Pure Wrestling title. After a month into his last title reign McIllroy severly twisted his knee and was put on the sidelines for a month, his return was hyped up but the stigma only last a few short weeks as SCW were invaded by a group of wrestlers who McIllroy had locked up with back in the HWC days. These guys where lead by HWC owner Bruce Blade. McIllroys former allies had also lined up with the HWC. John was then given the choice to stay on the side of what soon became the hated side of SCW, or the well loved side of HWC. John decided to hell with it and joined his former stable mates to have the Tartan Army heading the HWC's side. HWC and SCW went under a fierce battle of forces before finally HWC won the battle. McIllroy then went on to capture the Classic Champions four times before getting back into the Heavyweight picture capturing the Heavyweight Title a further three times in 1999 McIllroy made the announcement to quit and retire from professional wrestling after a long series of injuries to his left knee.
